Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
I have heard it many times before and never has it rung truer in my head than today. My dream as an 18-year-old was to “save the world” from environmental destruction and pollution. It was a big problem then, but it is a massive problem now. For the past 27 years I have tinkered with ideas on how to address this, but nothing has ever materialised. Nothing but a few scraps of notes and concept sketches. So much so that I even convinced myself to give up on the idea completely. It’s not meant to be, it’s a tall order, in my next life perhaps!
Something eats into you when you do not carry out your dreams. At first, just a tiny sensation in your stomach. You put it to the back of your mind, try to forget about it and distract yourself with other things. Indulge in fine foods, alcohol and all the pleasures that life can offer you. Start a new hobby and completely immerse yourself in it. For a while you are actually pleased that you have succeeded in forgetting what you have originally set out to achieve. But eventually it comes back. You are drowning, gasping for air. That feeling has always been there, only you have numbed yourself with all the ‘drugs’ available.
When you do not follow your dreams (your life’s purpose), the Universe has a way of steering you back on course. Subtly at first, but if you do not heed those signals, they become stronger and stronger until eventually it is like a boulder stopping you dead in your tracks. “Do not keep going the way you are going! You are going the wrong way. Crash into me if you wish but I strongly advise you to change course!”
It is time to change direction. Today is the first day of the rest of my life!
